Oberoi steps down as EIH arm’s chairman

NEW DELHI: Oberoi Hotels patriarch P R S Oberoi has stepped down as chairman of EIH Associated Hotels, an associate company of the group’s flagship EIH where he remains executive chairman. The group as a whole operates 33 hotels. Of them, EIH Associated has in its portfolio Oberoi Cecil, Shimla, Oberoi Rajvilas, Jaipur and Tridents in six cities. P R S Oberoi (93), known as Biki in the industry, is the son of late Rai Bahadur M S Oberoi, the founder of The Oberoi Group. A doyen of Indian hospitality, Biki continues at the helm of the flagship EIH.
In a BSE filing on Tuesday, EIH Associated said: “… Prithivraj Singh Oberoi has resigned from the office of chairman and director of the company with effect from May 2, 2022…. The board of directors further announce the appointment of Shib Sanker Mukherji as non-executive chairman of the company with effect from May 2, 2022.”
Among the senior most management level persons at the group, S S Mukherji was vice chairman of EIH Associated till May 1. A CA by training, he has spent over four decades in the hospitality industry. Mukherji joined the board of EIH Associated as a director in October 1988, and became its MD in June, 2000. Five years later he stepped down as MD and has been continuing as a director.
Hospitality industry insiders say Mukherji had headed the company earlier too some decades back for some time when P R S Oberoi had to take care of his health. “Under Biki’s overall leadership, the Oberoi Group is being run by his son Vikram Oberoi who is MD & CEO of the flagship EIH Ltd. Stepping down from EIH Associated could have been mainly due to advanced age to avoid the fatigue of going to attend board meetings,” they said.
