ASCI targets rule-breaking ads – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The Advertising Council of India (ASCI) has clamped down on commercials that have been found to be in violation of India’s advertising guidelines. The move comes with the latest edition of the Indian Premier League witnessing high decibel ads from gaming companies.
Last month, 285 social media ads of online real-money gaming companies were found to be guilty of flouting norms. In the first week of the IPL (March 26 to April 3), the advertising watchdog screened 35 ads from the category across TV and overthe-top channels and identified 14 to be in potential violation of its code.
Brands such as Fairplay, My11Circle, Winzo, MPL, Junglee Rummy and Betway were among those that have been informed of potential violations, the ASCI said. Brands whose ads on social media are under the scanner include Guru11, Namma11, Khelo Fantasy, Ballebazi and Twelfth Man.
“Despite clear guidelines, some online real-money gaming firms are attempting a shortcut,” said Manisha Kapoor, CEO & secretary general at ASCI. “For an industry that is under significant regulatory scrutiny, such acts by some companies paint the entire industry as irresponsible. ”
